Hi Guys in this article we discuss the Difference between forward and backward extrusion it is important topic in forming processes. Forward extrusion and backward extrusion are two different processes used in metal forming. The main difference between the two lies in the direction of material flow relative to the movement of the punch and die. So let's start with further information,

Let's see some basic definitions of Forward Extrusion and Backward Extrusion

Forward Extrusion

It is the process we can see that the metal is extruded in the direction of applied force hence is known as direct extrusion. It is also called Hooker extrusion. Forward extrusion, also known as direct extrusion, is a metal forming process where a punch pushes the material through a die in a forward direction. The punch is positioned behind the billet or workpiece, and it moves towards the die, causing the material to flow through the die opening. This process is typically used to produce cylindrical or tubular components with a length greater than the initial billet.

Backward Extrusion

In Backward extrusion, the billet remains stationary while die pushed into biller by Hollow ram through this extrusion takes place.Backward extrusion, also known as indirect extrusion, is a metal forming process where the punch is positioned within the billet or workpiece, and it moves towards the rear end of the die. The material flows around the punch and through the die opening in a backward direction relative to the movement of the punch. This process is typically used to form components with a length smaller than the initial billet.

 Forward or Direct Extrusion

Backward or Inverted extrusion

1It is the simplest, but is limited by the fact that as the ram moves the billet must slide or shear at the interface between billet and container. High friction forces involved. In backward or inverted extrusion the billet does not move relative to the container, instead the die moves.
2High extruding forces required, however mechanically more convenient.Low friction forces, the friction involved is only between the die and container and this is independent of billet length.
Extrusion force is 25 to 30% less than in forward extrusion.
3Scrap or process waste is about 18 to 20% of the billet weight.Scrap or process waste is only 5 to 6% of billet weight.
4Extrusion forces required.Low extruding forces required.
5High friction forces overcomes.Low friction forces are overcome.

So in this article we discussed the information on Difference between Forward Extrusion and Backward Extrusion hope you this information is useful for you.
