Advantages and Disadvantages of Hydro Power plant

Advantages

1) In hydro power plant the capital cost is comparatively high but it's operational cost is low, because of this the cost of power generation per unit is less.
2) In  hydro power plant no ash disposal problems of steam power plant and nuclear waste disposal problems like nuclear power plant.
3) Hydro power plant can be used for irrigation and for flood control.
4) This plants require less staff for maintaining the plant.
5) Used for peak load and base load plants.
6) In hydro power plants efficiency is high comparing with other plants.
7) Hydro power plants are reliable.
8) In this power plants staring and stopping the plant operations takes less time comparing with other power plants.
9) Life of the plants is more.
10 ) Maintenance cost is low.

Disadvantages

1) Power generation depends upon availability of water, so these are dependent on rainfall water.
2) In developing the hydro power plants time required is high.
3) Plants are located away from the centers so required long transmission lines, due to this increases power loss and cost of transmission.
4) Large space is required for setup the plant.
5) Capital cost of these plants is high.
