Introduction

A steam condenser is closed vessel into which the steam exhausted and condensed after doing work in an engine cylinder or turbine.

A steam condenser has two objects

1) In steam condenser the primary object is to maintain a low pressure (below atmospheric pressure) so as to obtain the maximum possible energy from steam and thus to secure a high efficiency.

2) The secondary object is to supply pure feed water to hot well. it is pump back to  boiler.

Advantages 

1) It increases expansion ratio of steam and thus increase efficiency of plant.

2) It reduces back pressure of steam and thus more work can be obtained.

3) Reduces temperature of steam and thus more work can be obtained.

4) The reuse of condensate steam as feed water for boiler reduces the cost of generation.

5) Temperature of condensate is higher. Therefore the amount of heat supplied per kg of steams reduced. 

Requirement of Steam Condensing Plant

1) Condenser

It is closed system. The steam gives up heat energy to coolant during process of condensation.

2) Condensing pump

It is a pump which removes condensed steam from condenser to hot well.

3) Hot well

It is a sump between the condenser and boiler which receives condensed steam.

4) Boiler feed pump

Which pumps the steam from the hot well to the boiler. This is ready by increase the pressure of condensate.

5) Air extraction pump

It is a pump which extract air from the condenser.

6) cooling tower 

In cooling tower is used for cooling the water which is discharged from the condenser.

7) Cooling water pump 

In cooling water pump which circulates the cooling water through the condenser.
