Define free vibration, damped vibration, forced vibration and Resonance

Free vibration:-

Vibrations in which there are no friction and external forces after the initial release of the body are known as free vibration.

Damped vibration:-

velocity When the energy of vibrating system is gradually dissipated by friction and other resistances, the vibrations are said to be damped vibration.

The vibrations are gently cease and the system rests in its balance position.

Forced vibration:-

When the repeated force continuously acts on a system, the vibrations are said to be forced.

The frequency of the vibrations is that of the applied force and is independent of their own natural frequency of vibrations.

Resonance:-

velocity When the frequency of the external force is same as that of natural frequency of the system, a state of resonance is said have been reached.

Resonance results in large amplitudes of vibration and this may be vicious.
