a) Definition of Refrigeration 


Refrigeration is the process of removing heat from a space, material, or substance to lower its temperature and maintain it at a desired level. This is typically achieved through the use of a refrigeration system, which uses a refrigerant (such as ammonia, freon, or carbon dioxide) to absorb and release heat.

In a refrigeration system, the refrigerant is compressed to raise its temperature and pressure, then cooled in a condenser to remove heat and condense it into a liquid. One ton of refrigeration is defined as the amount of heat that must be removed from one short ton (2000 pounds or 907 kilograms) of water at 32°F (0°C) to turn it into one short ton of ice at the same temperature in 24 hours. This is equivalent to 12,000 British thermal units (BTUs) per hour or approximately 3.516 kilowatts of cooling power. The ton of refrigeration is commonly used in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry to rate the cooling capacity of air conditioning systems, refrigeration systems, and heat pumps.

 

c) What is the 1 ton of refrigeration?


One ton of refrigeration is a unit of cooling capacity that is equal to the amount of heat that must be removed from one short ton (2000 pounds or 907 kilograms) of water at 32°F (0°C) to turn it into one short ton of ice at the same temperature in 24 hours.
