Advantages and Disadvantages Of Locomotive Boiler

Locomotive boiler is mainly employed in locomotive with using of stationary boiler. In this boiler natural circulation used. Locomotive boiler is external fire tube boiler and requires large space. Let's see the some Advantages and disadvantages of locomotive boiler,

A locomotive boiler is a type of boiler specifically designed for use in steam locomotives. It is a horizontal, fire-tube boiler with a cylindrical shell that contains a large number of small tubes. The heat of combustion produced by burning fuel in the firebox is transferred to the surrounding water through these tubes, generating steam.

The locomotive boiler typically has a centrally located firebox, which is surrounded by a water jacket to absorb heat. The firebox is where the fuel, such as coal or oil, is burned, producing hot gases that travel through the tubes to transfer their heat to the water. The firebox is equipped with a grate at the bottom to allow air to enter for combustion, and a chimney or smokestack at the top to exhaust the combustion gases.

The steam generated in the locomotive boiler is used to power the steam locomotive. It is directed into cylinders, where it expands against pistons, creating mechanical motion. This motion is transmitted to the locomotive's wheels, propelling the train forward.

Locomotive boilers were widely used during the steam era of rail transport, from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century, when steam locomotives were the primary means of transportation. However, with the advent of diesel and electric locomotives, the use of steam-powered locomotives has significantly diminished. Today, most locomotives are powered by diesel engines or electricity, which are more efficient and easier to maintain than steam boilers.

Advantages

1) Locomotive boiler is portable it can be move from one place to another.

2) In this boiler steam generation rate is high.

3) Economy is fair.

4) In locomotive boiler evaporation charge is large.

5) Operations are easy.

6) Free from outside insulation can reduce the overall cost.

7) steaming capacity is high.

8) Installation cost is low.

Disadvantages

1) When leakage occurs the joints decreases it's efficiency.

2) Corrosion problem is common.

3) For high loads it is not suitable due to problem of overheating.

4) Needs large flat surface.

5) Inside cleaning is not possible.

6) Parts needs bracing.

Applications of Locomotive Boiler

1) Used in railway engines.

2) Uses in agriculture field and saw mill plants.

So in this article we discussed the topic Advantages and Disadvantages Of Locomotive Boiler hope you understand well.
