Difference between Stock Transfer and Transfer Posting |
In SAP MM (Materials Management), there are two
different concepts related to transfers: Stock Transfer and Transfer Posting.
Although they both involve the movement of materials within the system, they
serve different purposes. Here's a differentiation between the two:
Stock Transfer:
Stock transfer refers to the movement of materials
from one storage location to another within the same company code or plant.
The purpose of stock transfer is to ensure the
availability of materials at a different location where they are required,
without involving any external procurement or sales processes.
Stock transfer typically involves a change in the
stock's physical location within the organization, but the material remains
under the same ownership.
Stock transfer can be initiated to balance stock
levels, optimize storage, support production processes, or fulfill specific
requirements at a different location.
Transfer Posting:
Transfer posting refers to the movement of materials
between different stock types, valuation classes, or company codes.
The purpose of transfer posting is to change the
status or characteristics of materials in the system, such as changing the
stock type from unrestricted to blocked, or from quality inspection to
unrestricted use.
Transfer posting may involve changes in valuation,
batch management, storage locations, or other parameters associated with the
material master data.
Transfer postings can also occur between plants,
storage locations, or company codes, but they are not limited to these
movements only.
In summary, stock transfer deals with the physical
movement of materials from one location to another within the same company code
or plant, while transfer posting involves changing the status or
characteristics of materials, including movement between different stock types,
valuation classes, or company codes.
