Hi guys today we start learn new topic What is gasket its types It's Size and material so without wasting of time let's see further inforation about this topic,
What is gasket and its types
What is gasket?
A gasket is device used to maintain a barrier against the transfer of fluid across the coupling surfaces of mechanical assembly. It is used in static joints Such as cylinder block and cylinder head.

Types of gaskets-
There are three types of gaskets metallic non metallic and semi-metallic type
Metallic gaskets:-
Metallic gaskets consists of copper or aluminium, sheets of lead. Metallic gaskets are used for high pressure and reversal applications. They an be use after being cut from sheets.
Limiting temperature of metallic gaskets are follows.
Lead 90°©
Copper 250°©
Brass 250°©
Aluminum 400°©

They are allowing to corrosion and chemical atmosphere. Performance depends upon surface finish.
Non metallic:-
Non metallic gaskets are made of asbestos, cork, plastic or rubber. Another advantage is dimensional stability. They are used in cylinder head, steam pipe fittings, manifold connections, water pipe fittings, Vulcanized compound rubber and cork are employed as gasket in steam lines, igniting chambers and chemical environment.
They are used for imply irregular surfaces. They are of low cost, but affected by fungus and alkalis.
Rubber gasket |
Rubber have excellent impermeability and ability to flow into joint imperfections when wedge.
Asbestos Gasket |
Asbestos gaskets used up to 250°© while other non metallic gasket have limit temperature of 70°© .
Semi-metallic gasket:-
Is a combination of metallic and non metallic gaskets.
This metal provide strength, conformability. The semi metallic Gasket is spiral wound. This gaskets operate in all conditions, high pressure and temperature conditions. uses in groove flanges.
What is gasket size?
The size of a gasket refers to its dimensions, which are typically measured in terms of diameter, thickness, and possibly other relevant parameters depending on the specific design and application requirements. Gasket size is crucial for ensuring proper sealing between mating surfaces in mechanical systems.
These dimensions must be carefully matched to the corresponding surfaces to achieve an effective seal and prevent leakage of fluids or gases. Gasket sizes can vary widely depending on the specific application, ranging from small gaskets used in household appliances to large gaskets used in industrial machinery and pipelines.
What is gasket material?
Gasket materials refer to the substances from which gaskets are made. These materials are selected based on factors such as the intended application, the properties required for effective sealing, and environmental considerations such as temperature, pressure, and chemical compatibility. Common materials used for gaskets include rubber, silicone, metal, graphite, cork, fiberglass, and various composite materials.
Each material has its own set of advantages and limitations, such as resistance to specific chemicals, flexibility, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
Choosing the right gasket material is essential for ensuring a reliable seal and the overall performance of the mechanical system.
In this lecture we study What is gasket its types It's Size and material basic information useful for mechanical work.
