In this article we learn about Comparison between Capstan Lathe and Turret Lathe. So let's start further information,
Comparison between Capstan Lathe and Turret Lathe
Capstan lathe and turret lathe are comparable in construction, operation and application.
What is a capstan lathe?
Capstan lathe is a type of machine tool used for machining relatively small workpieces. It is designed for high-speed production of turned components, typically in large quantities. The distinguishing feature of a capstan lathe is its turret, which holds multiple cutting tools that can be quickly indexed into position for machining operations.
In operation, the workpiece is held in a collet or chuck and rotated while the cutting tools mounted on the turret perform various machining operations such as turning, facing, grooving, and threading. The turret can be rotated and locked into position, allowing for rapid tool changes and efficient production.
Capstan lathes are commonly used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and electronics manufacturing where high-volume production of precision components is required. They are valued for their speed, accuracy, and ability to produce parts with consistent quality.

Comparison between Capstan Lathe and Turret Lathe
Construction and working principle of capstan and turret lathe are similar. Turret lathe is meant for wide heavy jobs and capstan lathe for tiny and light jobs.
Principle parts-
1) Bed:-
Bed is the base of machine, is made by cast iron, it is rigid sufficient to absorb vibrations and resist cutting forces. The bed has constructed guide ways on its top. In the end of bed, headstock is mounted. Cross-slide is mounted on the bed in between headstock and saddle.
2) Headstock:-
Is similar to normal center lathe but large and weighty in establishment. Powerful motor is provided spindle speed range up to 2000 rpm.
3) Turret head:-
Is a block which holds more tools at a time. Turret can be indexed in vertical axes. By indexing tools guide to position for machining. Turret head arrange on ram. Saddle slide on bed ways while construct.
4) Cross slide:-
Is provided on bed of lathe in between head stock and turret saddle. Cross slide has two posts. One is mounted on head of machine. Rear tool post carries cutting off tool which fit upside down.
