Welded joints-

Welding is an low price and structured method for obtaining a permanent joint of metallic parts.


Welding joints refer to the specific locations where two or more pieces of metal are joined together using various welding processes. The aim of welding joints is to create a strong and permanent bond between the materials.




Welding Definition:-

 welding can defined as process of joining materials by heat to a satisfactory temperature with or without pressure.


 There are three methods of welding 

1) Cast welding, 2)electric resistance welding 3) fusion welding


1) Forge welding:- 

In forge welding parts are heated to extend plastic Stage and joint by collision force.


2) Electric welding:- 

In electric welding parts are pressed jointly and electric current pass between them. So metal heated to bonding temperature.

3) Fusion welding:-

In fusion welding parts heat by oxyacetylene flame and sometimes electric arc to extend fusion temperature and join simultaneously by adding filler substance from welding rod. 




Fusion welding are following types

 a) Gas welding b) Thermit welding 3) Electric arc welding


Types of welded joints


Butt Joint:

This joint is formed by joining two pieces of metal aligned in the same plane, end-to-end. It's often used for joining plates or sheets together.


Corner Joint:

In a corner joint, the edges of two pieces of metal are joined at right angles. This type of joint is commonly used in box or frame constructions.


T-Joint:

A T-joint is created when the edge of one metal piece is welded to the surface of another metal piece at a right angle, forming a T-shape.


Lap Joint:

A lap joint involves overlapping the edges of two metal pieces and then welding them together. It's frequently used for joining sheets or plates.


Edge Joint:


An edge joint is formed by welding together the edges of two parallel or nearly parallel metal pieces.


Groove Joint:

Groove joints involve preparing a groove or channel in the metal pieces to be joined, allowing for a stronger weld deposit.


Fillet Joint:

Fillet joints are created by joining two metal pieces at an angle or curve, typically using a triangular cross-section.

These are foundational types of welded joints used in welding applications across various industries. Each type has specific characteristics and applications based on the structural requirements and materials involved.



Applications:-


1) Cost of welded assembly is lower than rivetted joints.

2) Welded joints are leakproof compared to rivetted joints.

3) Welded assemblies takes less time for production.

4) Welded structure fabricated of mild steel plates, angles, rod are lighter than cast iron structures.

5) Capital investment of welding shop is lower than foundry shop.

6) Welded structure made as easily produced than castings.

7) Welding joints find extensive applications across various industries including construction, manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and more. 

8) They are used to fabricate structures, machinery, pipelines, vehicles, and components where a secure and durable connection is required.
