What is manometer?


MANOMETERS-


 Is device in which column of a suitable fluid are used to calculate the variance pressure between two point, may be adequate, some modifications of the tube are necessary and this modified tube is known as manometer.

 It typically consists of a U-shaped tube filled with a liquid, such as mercury or colored water. The pressure of the substance being measured causes the liquid in the tube to rise or fall, allowing for pressure readings to be taken.

A manometer is a device used for measuring the pressure of liquids and gases. It comprises a U-shaped tube partially filled with a liquid. The pressure of the substance being measured causes the liquid in the tube to move, providing a measure of pressure.

Working:-

a container having a fluid pressure is measured and  the other end is open to atmosphere. 


The down part of the U-tube contain a fluid immiscible with the fluid A and is of greater density than that of A.


 This fluid is called manometric fluid. The pressures at the two points P and Q  in a horizontal plane within the continuous expanse of the same fluid (liquid B in this case) must be equal.


 Then equating the pressures at P and Q in terms of the heights of the fluids above those points, with the aid of the fundamental equation of hydrostaticsp1 + rA g (y + x) = patm + rB g x

Hence, p1 – patm = (rB – rA) g x – rA g y 


where p1 is the absolute pressure of the fluid A in the pipe or container at its centre line and patm is the local atmospheric pressure. When the pressure of the fluid in theo container is lower than the atmospheric pressure, the liquid levels in the manometer could be adjusted.


Types of Manometer


U-Tube Manometer:

Pressure difference between the two arms of the U-tube causes the liquid level to change, allowing pressure measurement.


Inclined Manometer:

Similar to a U-tube manometer, but the tube is inclined at an angle. Useful for measuring small pressure differences.


Well-Type Manometer:

Involves a reservoir of liquid connected to a tube containing the gas or liquid whose pressure is being measured. Pressure difference causes the liquid level in the well to rise or fall, indicating pressure.


Differential Pressure Gauge:

Measures the difference in pressure between two points in a system. Can be based on various principles, such as Bourdon tubes, diaphragms, or bellows.


McLeod Gauge:

Utilizes the compression of a gas in a sealed container to measure pressure. Often used in vacuum systems.


Example of  Manometer:


A manometer is a tool used for measuring the pressure of gases or liquids. It commonly consists of a U-shaped tube partially filled with a liquid, like mercury or water.

Pressure exerted on one end of the tube causes the liquid level to change, providing a measurement of pressure.
