What is Damping ?

 When a torque is applied in system in direction opposite to its motion it is known as damping.


 In case of coulomb damping, the opposition is constant and thus there will be a constant difference error between the input and output under steady conditions.


Damping is process of reducing the energy within a system, typically by converting kinetic energy into other forms such as heat.


It is often used to stabilize or control the motion of mechanical systems, mitigate vibrations, and prevent excessive oscillations.

In the viscous damping provided by a dashpot, the opposition is proportional to the relative velocity.

 As the relative velocity is zero in steady state , damping is also zero.


Types of damping


Three types of damping


Viscous Damping: Occurs when the damping force is proportional to the velocity of the object. It's like the resistance experienced when moving through a viscous fluid.


Dry Friction Damping: Involves damping due to the resistance between surfaces in contact when they slide or move against each other without lubrication.


Hysteresis Damping: Happens when energy is dissipated due to internal friction within the material of the oscillating system, causing a delay or phase shift in the response to the applied force.


Example of Damping


An example of damping in action is a car's shock absorbers. As the car encounters bumps or uneven road surfaces, the shock absorbers dampen the oscillations of the car's suspension system.


 This damping effect reduces the amplitude and duration of the car's vertical motion, providing a smoother and more stable ride for the passengers.

Damping in physics refers to the process of reducing the amplitude or intensity of oscillations or vibrations in a system. It involves dissipating energy from the system, typically converting it into heat or other forms, thereby diminishing the motion over time.
